Marshall began his training under the guidance of his mother at Beverley Rowles School of Dance.
In 1986 Marshall was accepted in the National Theatre Ballet School under the guidance of Gailene Stock, Dale Baker, Gary Norman, Anne Jenner, Ilene Tasker, Mikayla Kirkaldie, Martin Rubinstein and Leigh Rowles.
In 1988 Marshall auditioned and was accepted into the Australian Ballet School where he completed his training and received an Advanced Diploma of Dance.
In his time at the Australian Ballet School Marshall received the Borovansky memorial scholarship and the Australian Ballet Society's James and Pamela Mills Scholarship. As a second year student Marshall was invited to perform with the Dancers Company and then in 1990 toured again with the Dancers Company in his final year.
